St Nicholas
Looking
back down the nave you can see a small stained glass window in the
tower above the front door. This is the St Nicholas window, gifted
by Sir Alexander and Lady MacDougall.
It was dedicated on 8th November 1936.
St Nicholas is the patron saint of children, scholers, merchants, sailors, travellers, and thieves. In legend he gave gifts of gold to three poor girls for their dowries, which gave rise to the custom of giving gifts on his feast day (6th December). Still followed in the Netherlands and Germany, elsewhere this has transferred to 25th December, Christmas Day.
