Malawi - Mosquito Nets:
Part
of the St Nicholas' Malawi Project is to help improve the health and
wellbeing of the people in the village where Phiri Church is situated,
and one of the ways we have chosen to do this is to help prevent disease
from taking hold in the first place. With this in mind, we have provided
2,000 mosquito nets for every sleeping area in Singo Village, and the
surrounding areas, to help stop the spread of malaria.
The nets were distributed in October 2010 and photographs and video
footage of the distribution can be seen by clicking
the Gallary and YouTube items on the left.
In April 2011 the first post-distribution survey of mosquito net usage
was undertaken. From the 2000 nets distributed, 168 nets were examined
and over 50 homes were visited. This was a huge task and the fantastic
news is that there were no reported new cases of malaria in the last
season. Only one home visited during the survey was not using the net
they had been given, and in only one other home visited the positioning
of the nets had to be adjusted. The survey will now be carried out
annually for the next three years.
Many thanks,
The Malawi Committee
