About Us
Rev. George R. Fiddes was born in 1953 and
raised in Dundee, edu
cated at the Morgan Academy and started his working
life as an apprentice engineer with the National Cash Register company,
a very large employer in Dundee at that time.
His involvement in the church really took on any meaning when he was
drawn to the Wishart Memorial Church where, after attending a Heralds
Rally, he gave his life to Christ. Feeling the call to the ministry
George left the employ of the N.C.R. and started a divinity degree at
Glasgow University just before his eighteenth birthday.
Having successfully achieved his Bachelor of Divinity and a Diploma in
Pastoral Studies, George was assistant minister in Armadale, West
Lothian for a year, having married Carol in June 1978.
George was ordained and inducted to the parish of Auchterless in the
Presbytery of Buchan. There with Carol, he spent six happy years
learning something of the Doric tongue and farming ways. It was also in
Auchterless that their two children, George and Jennifer were born.
In 1985 he received a call to be minister of St. Nicholas, Prestwick
where he continues ministering to the congregation and parish.
The Church Choir currently consists of 20 members (7 sopranos, 8
contraltos, 2 tenors and 3 basses) whose prime function it is to lead
the praise at Services of Worship.
The Choir meets weekly on Friday evenings from 7.45pm until 9.3Opm for
practice and on Sunday mornings for a brief “warm-up” prior to the
Service.
Choir practices - under the direction of the Organist - consist of
learning and preparing choral items for use in church, singing hymns and
anthems, and working hard to ensure that the music sung in church
continues to achieve its already high standard.
Choir members are good friends and, as well as showing considerable
dedication and commitment, enjoy a great deal of fun and good-natured
banter.
In addition to the congregational hymns, the Choir sings two items - a
short interlude or Introit and a slightly longer Anthem - at almost
every Service. Perhaps the Choir’s most significant contribution is at
the annual Service of Lessons and Carols at Christmas which consists of
about a dozen choral items.
At a time when many churches struggle to maintain a choir, we in St.
Nicholas are fortunate to have these talented people so willing to share
their gifts in Praise of God.
